Lindera benzoin este un arbust mare, cu o coroană rotundă formată din ramificații dense, cu crengi și ramuri subțiri. Crenguțele anuale sunt verzui, în timp ce scoarța veche, ușor încrețită, este gri-maronie. Frunzele destul de înguste sunt de un verde strălucitor și devin galben-aurii intense toamna. Atât crengile, cât și frunzele sunt foarte aromate atunci când sunt deteriorate. Florile se deschid înainte de apariția frunzelor.
