Arbore mic cu creștere lentă, cu o coroană rotundă neregulată, cu o înălțime de aproximativ 5 m. Crenguțele tinere sunt de culoare roșu-violet, iar ramurile mai bătrâne și scoarța sunt gri deschis și canelate. Frunzele impare-penate cresc cu o lungime de 20 - 30 cm și sunt formate din 5 - 9 foliole. Acestea apar de culoare roșu lucios, dar devin roșu purpuriu mat în timpul verii.
