Arbore mic, cu o coroană piramidală foarte regulată, dens ramificată, cu o înălțime cuprinsă între 3 și 6 m. Crengile tinere sunt de culoare verde închis, iar scoarța veche este maro verzuie și netedă. Frunzele lucioase de culoare verde închis sunt ovale până la aproape dreptunghiulare, cu vârfurile curbate în jos. Au o lungime de 3 până la 5 cm și o lățime de aproximativ jumătate. Marginile frunzelor sunt puternic ondulate și posedă între 4 și 6 spini puternici și ascuțiți. Florile sunt mici, mai degrabă discrete și feminine. Ele sunt urmate de boabe de culoare roșu aprins de 6-8 mm. Uneori se numără printre hibrizii I. x meserveae, dar a apărut dintr-o încrucișare între I. aquifolium și I. pernyi. Îi place un sol bogat în humus, umed, dar bine drenat și tolerează atât solurile acide, cât și cele calcaroase. Pe lângă faptul că este folosit în parcuri și grădini, este potrivit și pentru a fi folosit ca gard viu îngust.
