De la forma de arbust care crește până la un copac de dimensiuni mici sau medii, cu o coroană piramidală sau ovală largă. Arborele se poate transforma într-un arbore mare după mulți ani într-o locație favorabilă. Coroana este foarte dens ramificată; acest efect este accentuat de frunzele rigide și veșnic verzi. Frunzele sunt de un verde închis lucios și au marginea puternic ondulată, cu câteva spini substanțiale. Florile sunt mici și discrete. Acestea sunt hermafrodite. Florile femele sunt urmate de drupe cărnoase de culoare roșie strălucitoare, numite în practică "fructe de pădure".
