Arbust mare, larg, de până la aproximativ 5 m înălțime, cu ramificații dense, oarecum încâlcite. Crengile tinere sunt gri-maronii și ușor păroase. Frunzele de formă ovoidală sau rotundă inversată sunt de culoare verde plictisitor și ușor păroase. Toamna se îngălbenește. Frunzele măsoară între 10 și 13 cm. Florile apar în ciorchini compacți, axilari, grupați. Florile individuale măsoară până la aproximativ 4 cm și sunt formate din patru petale înguste, de culoare galben-aurie și un caliciu roșu-maroniu. Acestea se deschid din decembrie până în ianuarie. Semințele au fost trimise în Anglia din China în 1879, dar a fost nevoie de 20 de ani pentru a vedea calitățile acestei specii.
