Arbust mare, larg, cu o înălțime de aproximativ 4 m, cu ramificații dense, oarecum încâlcite. Scoarța brună este netedă chiar și la maturitate. Frunzele plantelor tinere pot avea o dimensiune de până la 20 cm. Florile sunt în ciorchini axilari compacți și grupați. Florile individuale au o dimensiune de până la peste 4 cm și variază în culoare de la galben pal până la roșu purpuriu, în funcție de cultivar. H. x intermedia provine dintr-o încrucișare între H. mollis și H. japonica. În diferite părți ale lumii, acest hibrid a evoluat independent. Alfred Rehder a fost cel care a descris pentru prima dată hibridul folosind o plantă din Arnold Arboretum din Statele Unite. Există numeroase soiuri cultivate. Hibridul, H. x intermedia, nu este cultivat ca atare.
