Ginkgo biloba (nucul japonez) este un arbore cu frunze caduce, care la început are o formă piramidală îngustă, dar care mai târziu se întinde pe scară largă. Trunchiul este de culoare gri-maronie și, mai târziu, adânc canelat. Pe trunchiurile foarte bătrâne apar bulgări caracteristici. Frunzele și modurile de flori se află pe lăstari scurți. Frunzele în formă de evantai stau împreună în mănunchiuri de 3 - 5 și au un apex incizat. Toamna, acestea devin de un galben auriu izbitor. În același timp, apar fructele care, odată ajunse la maturitate, au un miros neplăcut. Fructifică doar după 20 - 50 de ani. Arborele este dioic în mod natural, dar pe arborii bătrâni pot apărea atât flori masculine, cât și feminine. Ginkgo biloba este foarte rezistent la poluarea aerului și necesită o locație luminoasă. Arborele a apărut în urmă cu 250 de milioane de ani și a supraviețuit multor epoci, inclusiv cea a dinozaurilor. Cele mai vechi exemplare vii au în jur de 1.000 de ani. Ginkgo biloba poate ajunge la o vârstă considerabilă. În Japonia există exemplare despre care se afirmă că au o vechime de peste 1.000 de ani.
