Fraxinus ornus are o coroană largă, ovală sau rotundă, neregulată. Exemplarele adulte pot ajunge la o înălțime de 15 m, dar de obicei nu depășesc 10 m. Scoarța gri este netedă. Frunzele impare, de culoare verde-albastră până la verde mat, au o lungime de 20 - 25 cm și sunt formate din 7 foliole cu marginea fin zimțată. Spre deosebire de F. excelsior, F. ornus are mugurii frunzelor de culoare maro până la purpurie, de culoare gri ca pâsla. Înflorește cu flori de culoare albă până la alb-crem, foarte parfumate, în panicule proeminente, erecte și terminale. Acestea apar după dezvoltarea frunzelor, în mai/iunie. F. ornus formează nuci înaripate de aproximativ 3 cm lungime, care sunt dispuse în panicule. Arborele se poate folosi ca arbore de parc și este potrivit pentru zone industriale. Tolerează solurile mai uscate și calcaroase. Foarte rezistent la vânt.
