Crește de la o formă de arbust la un copac mic, cu o coroană ovoidală largă. Cultivat ca un arbore standard. Crengile lungi, oarecum curbate, poartă frunze de culoare purpurie închisă. Frunzele tinere sunt de culoare roșu deschis și reprezintă un element ornamental important primăvara.
