Cornus mas (cornul galben) este originar din multe zone din Europa Centrală și de Sud, unde crește de la arbust mare la arbore mic, cu mai multe tulpini, cu o coroană densă, în cele din urmă rotunjită. Crește lent. Crește la fel de înalt pe cât este de lat. Tulpinile mai bătrâne sunt de culoare gri-maronie și se descuamează, iar crengile tinere sunt verzi. Frunzele sunt verzi lucioase, devenind galben sau roșu-portocaliu toamna. Înflorește proeminent în perioada de iarnă, cu mult înainte de apariția frunzelor. Primăvara, lemnul câinesc galben este complet acoperit de flori galbene, care se află în umbeli mici, sferice. La începutul toamnei, urmează drupele ovale, de culoare roșie lucioasă, asemănătoare unor fructe de pădure, cu un diametru de până la aproximativ 2 cm. Acestea atârnă pe tulpini scurte și sunt comestibile, dar au un gust ușor acru. Utile pentru marmeladă, suc și pentru fabricarea vinului. Creșterea rădăcinilor este dens ramificată și superficială. Preferă solurile calcaroase.
