Un copac mic, cu mai multe tulpini, care crește din arbuști cu o coroană rotundă. Mai târziu, ramurile se pot lăsa ușor în jos, făcând coroana la fel de largă ca și înălțimea. Arborele crește încet. Crenguțele au culoarea de la roșu-maroniu la gri. Trunchiurile vechi prezintă pete gri ca urmare a desprinderii. Frunzele tinere sunt slab purpurii, dar mai târziu devin verde închis. Are partea inferioară de culoare alb-cenușie. Culoarea de toamnă este frumoasă, de la stacojiu la violet. Fiecare căpățână de flori discrete este înconjurată de 4 bractee (brățări) mari și roșii-roșii. Este deosebit de decorativă în floare. Deoarece C. florida f. rubra se găsește în sălbăticie, este posibil să existe unele variații în ceea ce privește culoarea florilor. Aceasta variază de la roz pal până la roșu-roșcat.
