Arbore mic a cărui caracteristică principală este ramificarea orizontală, care crește în trepte. În arealul său natural, crește uneori până la o înălțime de 15 m. Coroana poate crește la fel de mult ca și înălțimea sa. Crengile au culoarea de la roșu-maroniu la gri. Frunzele alterne sunt neregulate ca formă și mărime și au o culoare verde închis lucios.
