Arbore cu ramuri joase, cu coroana lată și rotunjită, nu foarte răspândit în țara noastră. Uneori crește și sub formă de arbust cu mai multe tulpini. Trunchiul este brun-cenușiu și neted, cu caneluri puțin adânci care apar la vârste mai înaintate. Lemnul, mai ales atunci când este abia tăiat, este de un galben frapant. Frunza compusă mare este compusă din 7 până la 9 frunze parțiale, ovoidale până la ovale, fiecare măsurând 8 - 14 cm. Frunzele individuale nu se află față în față pe fusul foliar. Toamna, acestea devin de un galben izbitor. Paniculele libere, pendulante, cu flori albe, ușor parfumate, au o lungime de aproximativ 25 cm. La sfârșitul verii apar păstăile, care trec de la verde la maro și apoi la maro purpuriu. Cladrastis kentukea are un sistem radicular substanțial și cărnos și crește cel mai bine într-un loc însorit și cald, dar este bine rezistentă.
