Chimonanthus praecox este un arbust mare, destul de dens ramificat, care se poate transforma într-un mic copac cu mai multe tulpini după mulți ani. Crenguțele de culoare verde-cenușiu deschis sunt ușor aplatizate, mai ales acolo unde sunt atașate frunzele. Frunzele sunt întotdeauna opuse, de formă oval-lanceolată până la oval-lanceolată și de dimensiuni foarte variabile. La plantele tinere, cu creștere viguroasă, acestea pot avea o dimensiune de până la 20 cm. Sunt de culoare verde închis proaspăt și ușor lucioase. Suprafața superioară este aspră la atingere. De la începutul lunii decembrie, se deschid florile caracteristice. Aceste flori în formă de clopot au o dimensiune de aproximativ 2,5 cm și se află întotdeauna în axilele unde erau frunzele acum căzute. Florile sunt de culoare galben pal cu un centru roșu-violet. Ele au un parfum proaspăt și plăcut. În funcție de înghețuri, florile se deschid între decembrie și sfârșitul lui februarie. Florile odată deschise pot fi deteriorate de îngheț, dar dacă florile sunt încă în muguri, rareori îngheață. Minunat arbore solitar de parc, dar datorită dimensiunilor sale modeste, potrivit și pentru utilizarea în grădini. Necesită un sol nutritiv, bine drenat și un loc în plin soare.
