Arbust mare la copac mic, cu o vază largă în formă de coroană rotundă. Frunzele rotunde sau în formă de rinichi sunt de culoare verde mediu. Florile apar în ciorchini compacți chiar înainte de dezvoltarea frunzelor. Acestea sunt de un roz purpuriu-violet intens și sunt net mai mari decât la specie. Înflorește foarte abundent de la o vârstă fragedă. Legumele rămân în copac toată iarna. A fost plantat ca răsad în Bodnant Garden în 1876. Datorită faptului că înflorirea era atât de izbitoare, Societatea Regală de Horticultură a acordat copacului un certificat de primă clasă în 1944, după care i s-a dat numele de cultivar "Bodnant". Arbore iubitor de căldură, care preferă solurile fertile calcaroase sau argiloase, în plin soare. Tolerează solul uscat.
