Arbust mare, de obicei cu mai multe tulpini, până la copac mic. Ramurile principale și trunchiul cresc destul de abrupt pentru a forma o coroană largă în formă de vază. Frunzele aproape rotunde sunt de un verde închis lucios și devin galben strălucitor toamna. Sunt destul de groase și corpolente la atingere. Florile apar chiar înainte ca frunzele să se dezvolte. Acestea sunt de un frumos roz purpuriu-violet intens și apar în buchete compacte. 'Avondale' înflorește foarte abundent la o vârstă fragedă și rămâne mai mic decât specia.
