În natură este un arbore de dimensiuni medii sau mari, dar în cultură este de obicei un arbust mare, cu mai multe tulpini. Trunchiurile cresc destul de abrupt pentru a forma o coroană largă în formă de vază. Frunzele aproape rotunde sunt de un verde închis lucios și devin galben strălucitor toamna. Acestea sunt destul de groase și corpolente la atingere. Florile apar chiar înainte ca frunzele să se dezvolte.
