De la un arbust mare, oarecum neregulat, care crește până la un copac de dimensiuni mici sau medii, cu o coroană rotundă. Crenguțele anuale sunt de culoare brun-violet și mai târziu devin gri-maronii. Frunza este aproape rotundă, cu vârful cu vârf larg și baza în formă de inimă. Ea răsare de un negru purpuriu strălucitor și izbitor. Mai târziu, devine mai mată și de un roșu purpuriu închis. Doar sub influența unor temperaturi nocturne mai ridicate, frunzele devin mai verzi. Florile apar chiar înainte de dezvoltarea frunzelor. Acestea sunt tipice pentru C. canadensis; de culoare roz pal și adunate în ciorchini mici. De preferință pe un sol argilos sau pe un sol calcaros bogat în nutrienți, umed, dar nu prea umed, în plin soare. Minunat solitar.
