Arbore mare de parc, cu o coroană rotundă, foarte lată, cu ramuri laterale care depășesc 30 m înălțime și lățime. Frunzele impare sunt foarte mari și au cel mai mare număr de frunze parțiale dintre toate Carya. Aceste frunze parțiale sunt alungite până la ușor falciforme, cu vârful lung și ascuțit. Culoarea toamnei este galben-maronie. După o înflorire discretă, urmează ciorchinii de fructe comestibile. Aceștia se află în coji alungite, cu aripi înguste. Cultură utilitară foarte importantă în Statele Unite, unde sunt cultivate peste 100 de soiuri de fructe. Arborele are un sistem radicular profund și îi place solul bogat în humus, bine drenat.
