Arbore de dimensiuni medii, de o grație remarcabilă, cu o coroană sferică aplatizată. Crenguțele glabre, subțiri și atârnate, sunt purpurii. Deoarece crengile anuale sunt destul de lungi, copacul are un aspect asemănător cu cel al salciei. Scoarța mai veche este netedă și cenușie.
