Betula platyphylla este un copac mare care înmugurește foarte devreme. Are o coroană neregulată, ovală sau alungită, destul de largă și deschisă. Exemplarele mature pot atinge o înălțime de 15 - 20 m. Trunchiul și ramurile tulpinii sunt foarte albe. Scoarța se desprinde în foițe subțiri. Frunzele verzi proaspete sunt ovale până la rombice și ajung la o dimensiune de 5 - 8 cm, marginea frunzei este destul de grosier zimțată, iar vârful frunzei este ascuțit. În aprilie, arborele înflorește cu catrințe masculine foarte subțiri și terminale și catrințe feminine erecte și subțiri. Cătănii sunt urmați de cătinii fructiferi de 2 - 4 cm, mari și pendulanți.
