Un mesteacăn ornamental de înălțime medie până la mare, cu o coroană dreaptă din care cresc ramuri puternic căzute. Forma coroanei este neregulat de ovală până la alungită și are o structură liberă și deschisă. Ocazional, arborele crește mai înalt de 20 m, cu o lățime de aproximativ 6-8 m. Trunchiul este de un alb strălucitor și rămâne așa până la bătrânețe. Inițial este neted, dar trunchiurile bătrâne sunt ușor solzoase. Crengile subțiri se îndoaie grațios, aproape perpendicular. Sunt de culoare brun-roșiatică și au lenticule verucoase. Frunzele de formă variabilă au marginea frunzelor dublu zimțată. Culoarea de toamnă este galbenă până la galben-brună. Elevațiile, compactarea solului și variația nivelului apei au un efect negativ asupra sănătății acestui mesteacăn. Arborele se înrădăcinează superficial. Vântul de mare nu este bine tolerat.
