Alnus glutinosa 'Imperialis' crește de la un arbust la un copac elegant de dimensiuni medii. Creșterea sa este lentă și are nevoie de destul de mult timp pentru a deveni un arbore adevărat, ceea ce îl face mai puțin potrivit pentru alei și străzi. Frunza răspândită rămâne mai mică decât cea a speciei, este foarte adânc incizată, iar lobii întregi sunt în formă de linie. Toamna, ea rămâne pe copac pentru o perioadă lungă de timp. Mugurii cu tulpină și frunzele tinere sunt lipicioase la atingere (glutinosa=sticky). Florile feminine sunt discrete, iar cele masculine sub forma unor catrințe galben-maronii de ± 7 cm lungime. Conurile de arin apar din septembrie și rămân pe copac o perioadă lungă de timp. În afară de frunzele grațioase, copacul are un port frumos de creștere, cu ramuri căzute. Arborele este bine înrădăcinat, cu o rădăcină principală ramificată. Tolerează slab pavajul.
