Alnus glutinosa (arin comun) este originar din aproape toată Europa și crește în special în zonele umede. Crescând în copaci puternici, uneori cu mai multe tulpini. Ocazional se găsește un exemplar matur cu o înălțime de peste 20 m. Frunzele împrăștiate cresc până la 10 cm, sunt ovale și au vârful rotunjit. Mugurii cu tulpină care au culoarea gri-violet și frunzele tinere sunt lipicioase la atingere (glutinosa=sticky). Călugării femelei sunt ovali și discreți, cu o lungime de ± 0,5 cm, iar cei masculi sunt galben-maronii, cu o lungime de ± 7 cm. Puieții de arin apar începând cu luna septembrie și rămân mult timp pe copac. Arborele se înrădăcinează ferm și destul de adânc și tolerează prost pavajul. Adesea este folosit ca lemn de umplutură în amenajările peisagistice. Nu are probleme cu tăierile grosiere. Puțin sensibil la vântul (de mare).
