Aesculus glabra este un arbore mare, cu o coroană rotundă. Lăstarii tineri sunt de culoare brun-roșiatică, iar crengile mai bătrâne sunt gri. Scoarța mai veche este aspră și se desprinde în felii subțiri. Crenguțele au un miros neplăcut atunci când sunt lovite. Este singura specie cu fructe mai mult sau mai puțin spinoase originară din America de Nord. Frunzele verzi devin uneori de un portocaliu frumos toamna.
