Acer saccharum "Newton Sentry" este un arbore de talie medie, cu o coroană columnară remarcabil de subțire, care se păstrează chiar și la o vârstă mai înaintată. Ramuri laterale foarte scurte și arcuite cresc din una sau mai multe ramuri principale drepte. Frunzele sunt puțin mai mici decât cele ale speciei și sunt oarecum coriacee la atingere. În trecut, a existat o anumită confuzie cu A. saccharum ´Temple´s Upright´. În prezent, este clar că "Newton Sentry" este mai îngustă decât celelalte două specii. De fapt, este cel mai îngust dintre toți arțarii. Arborele original, din cimitirul Newton din Newton, SUA, avea o înălțime de 15 m și o lățime de numai 4 m în 1994.
