Acer saccharum "Legacy" este un arbore de talie medie spre mare, a cărui coroană are o ramificare regulată, simetrică. Coroana este vizibil mai grea decât în cazul speciei. Crește cu o lățime de 9-10 m. Frunzele sale lungi și late sunt de un verde strălucitor și remarcabil de lucioase. Este de aproximativ 1,5 ori mai groasă decât cea a speciei și devine galben-portocaliu spre somon toamna. Atât obiceiul de creștere, cât și forma frunzelor se aseamănă cu cele ale A. platanoides. Diferența constă în faptul că frunzele lovite de A. saccharum nu produc sevă lăptoasă. Inflorescența apare simultan cu răsărirea frunzelor. Creșterea rădăcinilor este superficială, cu multe ramificații. Deși arțarul de zahăr se dezvoltă în multe tipuri de sol, solul excesiv de umed este nepotrivit.
