Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' este un arbust mare și puternic, care se transformă într-un copac mic, cu o coroană ovoidală inversată sau îngustă, în formă de evantai. Mai ales la arborii mai bătrâni, ramurile atârnă grațios. Cei cinci până la șapte lobi ai frunzelor palmate sunt fuzionați între ei la aproximativ o treime până la un sfert din baza frunzei. Marginile frunzelor sunt fin zimțate. Frunza este de culoare roșu vin închis, ușor mai roșie atunci când se desfășoară. Toamna devine roșu închis.
