Arbore înalt cu creștere rapidă, cu o coroană densă și cu un port variabil, de la formă de evantai larg la oval larg. Pe crengile goale se formează ocazional un strat de plută. Frunzele sunt oval-lanceolate până la ovale inversate, cu cea mai mare lățime la sau deasupra centrului. Netedă și verde lucios pe partea superioară, aproape goală pe partea inferioară.
