Arbore impunător, cu o coroană densă, în care ramurile inferioare sunt ușor căzute. Înălțime de până la 40 m, lățime de până la aproximativ 20 m. Scoarța rămâne netedă pentru o perioadă lungă de timp, dar mai târziu dezvoltă caneluri puțin adânci. Crenguțele tinere sunt brun-cenușii și albicioase păroase, mai târziu gri. Frunza mare este asimetrică, foarte aspră și de culoare verde închis. Pe partea inferioară este verde deschis și păroasă. Toamna, devine galbenă. Baza frunzei încovoiată acoperă o parte a pețiolului scurt, caracteristic frunzelor de ulm. Florile de culoare brun-violet apar înainte de dezvoltarea frunzelor. Fructele, nuci înaripate, sunt dispersate de vânt. U. glabra este puțin folosit ca specie. Din cauza stocării reduse a rădăcinilor, este adesea folosit ca portaltoi. Uneori apare incompatibilitatea, copacul rupându-se în punctul de altoire. Sensibil la boala olandeză a ulmului.
