Un arbore de talie medie, cu coroana verticală, piramidală și cu o ramură de inimă continuă și bună. Copacii maturi dezvoltă o coroană ovală și cresc între 6 și 10 m înălțime. Scoarța de culoare verde-cenușie este netedă. Frunzele relativ mici sunt ovale până la alungite-ovoidale și de culoare verde închis lucios. Toamna, capătă o culoare atractivă de roșu până la roșu-vin închis. Spre deosebire de mulți alți ulmi, "Frontier" înflorește în septembrie și nu primăvara. Arborele își are originea într-un hibrid între Ulmus minor și Ulmus parvifolia. Acesta din urmă este o specie asiatică care este veșnic verde în climatele mai blânde. Ulmus parvifolia are, în mod natural, o rezistență foarte mare la boala olandeză a ulmului. Frontier' a moștenit această rezistență într-o anumită măsură. Datorită formei ovale a coroanei sale, este potrivit ca arbore de bulevard sau de stradă.
