Arbore de talie medie, cu coroana inițial subțire și ascendentă, iar mai târziu larg conică. Este un arbore cu creștere rapidă, cu ramuri destul de subțiri și rigide, care se îndoaie ușor. Înălțimea este de 15 -18 m, lățimea de 5 - 6 m. La arborii tineri, trunchiul este neted și gri-argintiu, mai târziu se întunecă cu caneluri negre. Crengile tinere sunt brune, ușor păroase și cu lenticule. Mai târziu, ramurile devin goale și gri-maronii. Frunza este ovală, iar marginea frunzei este zimțată. Suprafața frunzei este netedă și lucioasă, de culoare verde închis. Toamna, aceasta devine galbenă. Puțin sensibil la boala olandeză a ulmului, mai ales atunci când este cultivat pe propriile rădăcini.
