Copac robust, cu un trunchi drept și greu. La arborii tineri, trunchiul crește drept mort până în vârf, cu o ramificație rigidă și dreaptă. Mai târziu, se dezvoltă câteva ramuri drepte și verticale ale trunchiului, lărgind copacul. Crenguțele tinere sunt gri-verzui și cu părul păros, dar în curând devin goale și verzi. Frunzele sunt mai mult sau mai puțin rotunde, de culoare verde închis mat, cu o parte inferioară densă și albă-feliată caracteristică. Vârful frunzei este scurt și ascuțit, iar baza este în formă de inimă. Marginea frunzei este puternic zimțată. Toamna, frunza devine galbenă. Rămâne pe copac pentru o perioadă lungă de timp. În iulie apar corymburi suspendate de flori puternic parfumate. Brățara cu peduncul scurt are o lungime de aproximativ 5 cm. T. tomentosa a fost folosit pe scară largă ca arbore urban, dar în prezent există mai multe soiuri cu un port mai regulat. Este destul de insensibil la afide datorită frunzelor sale felurite.
