Originar din mari părți ale Europei. Crește destul de încet în tinerețe, dar în cele din urmă poate ajunge la o înălțime de 25 - 30 m. Rămâne mai mic în cultură. Trunchiul este maro închis și canelat. Crengile tinere sunt verzi până la roșu-maroniu. T. cordata înmugurește cu aproximativ 14 zile mai târziu decât T. platyphyllos și are frunze relativ mici, de culoare verde-albastră pe dedesubt. Baza frunzei este în formă de inimă și uneori oblică, iar vârful frunzei este ascuțit. Florile foarte parfumate apar la începutul verii, dispuse câte 5 - 10 laolaltă în corimbi verticali scurți. Brățara de culoare verde deschis este puțin mai scurtă decât coloana, 6 - 7 cm. La sfârșitul verii, urmează fructele rotunde destul de mici. Aceștia sunt inițial gri și pufoși, dar mai târziu devin glabre. T. cordata suferă destul de puțin din cauza afidelor. Tilia cordata este una dintre multele Tilia cu o istorie veche.
