Un arbust cu creștere lentă și ramificat dens, care poate deveni un arbore neregulat cu mai multe tulpini. În arealul său natural, crește până la 15 - 20 m în înălțime, dar în cultură nu depășește aproximativ 5 m. Trunchiul este brun-roșcat și se desprinde în formă de fulgi. Ramurile cresc întinse și ușor erecte și sunt acoperite dens cu ramuri laterale scurte. Acele de culoare verde foarte închis sunt în formă de linie și ascuțite. Acestea sunt de un verde mai deschis pe dedesubt, iar tulpina scurtă este gălbuie. Înflorirea banală este urmată de semințe, dintre care 4/5 sunt înconjurate de un înveliș roșu cărnos de aproximativ 0,5 cm lungime. Datorită rezistenței sale mai bune decât T. baccata, această specie este cultivată pe scară largă în SUA și Canada. În Europa, T. cuspidata este folosită mai ales pentru forme de tăiere (bonsai), datorită creșterii sale cu mai multe tulpini.
