Arbust mare la copac mic, cu o coroană elegantă, aplatizată, globulară sau în formă de evantai. În cultură are o înălțime de 3-6 m, dar în sălbăticie au fost găsiți arbori de peste 10 m. Crenguțele tinere și subțiri sunt de culoare brun-roșiatică. Scoarța mai bătrână este maro și inițial foarte netedă. Mai târziu se desprinde ca scoarța de Prunus serrula. Frunzele ovale până la ovale alungite sunt verzi deasupra și gri-verzui dedesubt. Paniculele dense de flori alb-gălbui-gălbui apar în iunie. Staminele sunt de aproximativ două ori mai lungi decât tubul corolei și depășesc distinct florile. Florile au un miros destul de puternic, iar parfumul amintește de Ligustrum. Florile sunt urmate de fructe de cutie lemnoase de culoare maro închis. Acest liliac preferă o poziție caldă, însorită și crește în toate tipurile de sol, cu condiția să nu fie prea umed. Tolerează și varul.
