Arbore de mărime medie spre mare, cu o creștere verticală, care în curând devine ovală. Copacii bătrâni dezvoltă o coroană aproape rotundă. Trunchiul este neted și gri închis, iar trunchiurile mai bătrâne sunt ușor solzoase. Crengile tinere sunt verzi și ușor păroase. Începând cu al doilea an, ramurile devin goale și maro închis. Când se desfășoară, frunzele remarcabil de mari sunt alb-felcate. Pe partea inferioară, este gri-argintiu și rămâne așa pe tot parcursul verii. Toamna, frunzele devin gălbui, iar partea inferioară rămâne gri-argintie până la sfârșit. Florile sunt în corimbi erecți cu peduncul lung și sunt urmate de fructe rotunde până la eliptice, care devin roșu-portocaliu spre roșu-maroniu. Acest arbore a fost introdus din China de Frank Kingdon-Ward. 'John Mitchell' este singura clonă cultivată de S. thibetica.
