Acest arbore mic din Asia de Est seamănă foarte mult cu S. aucuparia și atinge o înălțime de 8-10 m. La o vârstă fragedă, coroana este încă dreaptă, devenind mai târziu ovală. Scoarța netedă este de culoare gri-argintiu până la gri-maroniu, cu lenticule maro. Crenguțele tinere sunt de culoare verde măsliniu și au, de asemenea, lenticeli proeminente. S. commixta are frunze neuniform penate, formate din 5 până la 6 (rareori 7) perechi de frunze.
