Arbore cu creștere rapidă, cu o coroană neregulată, ovală sau rotundă, transparentă. Înălțime 20 - 25 m, lățime aproximativ 12 - 18 m. Scoarța de culoare gri-maronie este aspră și adânc canelată. Crengile tinere sunt de culoare verde măsliniu spre maro. Pe ramuri sunt spini ascuțiți de aproximativ 3 cm lungime. Frunzele impare-pinnate au 9 - 19 foliole eliptice, de culoare verde-albastru închis, măsurând 1,5 - 4,5 cm. Robinia răsare târziu și își păstrează frunzele mult timp toamna. Culoarea sa de toamnă este galbenă. În iunie apar ciorchinii pendulanți compacți de flori parfumate, de culoare alb-crem, uneori ușor roz. Acestea sunt urmate de păstăi plate, de culoare roșie-maronie și corpolente, cu marginea înaripată, care adesea rămân toată iarna. Este un arbore cu înrădăcinare superficială, care crește bine pe soluri ușoare, calcaroase și formează mulți lăstari subterani.
