Arbore columnar subțire și remarcabil, cu o înălțime de aproximativ 15 m și o lățime de 3 m. Ramurile cresc strâns în sus, creând o coroană densă. Crengile tinere sunt de culoare gri-maronie. Scoarța veche este de culoare gri deschis spre gri închis și canelată în blocuri rectangulare mici. Frunzele sunt ovoidale inversate și, în general, puțin mai mari decât la Q. robur. Acestea sunt de culoare verde închis lucios și devin maro-gălbui toamna. Ghindele au o dimensiune de 2 până la 3 cm și sunt de obicei în perechi, unul dintre cele două fructe nu se dezvoltă.
