Formează o coroană conică lată, mai târziu rotunjită, cu o ramură principală continuă și cu ramuri de coroană grele. Trunchiul are caneluri aspre, cu plăci lungi de scoarță. Crenguțele tinere sunt cenușii-feltrate, cu margini la vârf. Mugurii sunt pufoși și păroși și au frunze de susținere musculoase. Frunzele de culoare verde închis cu piele sunt de formă variabilă, de obicei alungite sau ovale. Este aspră pe partea superioară, goală pe partea inferioară și are între 4 și 9 perechi de lobi superficiali până la foarte adânci. Culoarea de toamnă este galben-maronie. Rămâne pe copac până în timpul iernii. Ghindele sunt înconjurate pe jumătate de un nap care este acoperit în mod dens cu solzi lungi și înguste, recurbate și cu păr grizonat la vârfuri. Este un important producător de lemn, sensibil la crăparea de îngheț, dar insensibil la mucegai.
