Prunus mahaleb este un arbust sau un copac de talie medie, cu o înălțime cuprinsă între 5-10 m. Coroana este largă sau rotundă și are o structură deschisă. Crengile subțiri sunt brune și se exfoliază de obicei în gri. Crenguțele tinere sunt dens păroase de alb. Inițial, scoarța veche este gri și netedă. Abia mai târziu în viață devine canelată și se desprinde în plăci mici. Lemnul de Prunus mahaleb este plăcut aromat și este folosit, printre altele, la fabricarea tulpinilor de pipă.
Nu este un arbore de lemn, ci un arbore de lemn de foc.
Frunzele largi, de formă ovoidală până la rotundă, sunt lucioase, de culoare verde-mediu și mai deschise pe dedesubt. Suprafața superioară este glabra, iar pe partea inferioară nervurile sunt păroase de la alb la maro. În aprilie, în același timp cu frunzele înmugurite, se deschid florile albe și parfumate. Acestea au o dimensiune de aproximativ 1,5 cm și stau împreună în ciorchini de 6-10 flori. Ele pot fi urmate de fructe mici de culoare roșu închis până la negru. Acestea sunt comestibile, dar au un gust acrișor și acru.

În mod natural, Prunus mahaleb crește pe un sol destul de sărac și stâncos. Și în cultură, copacul crește cel mai bine pe un pat nu prea hrănitor și bine drenat. Dacă aceste condiții sunt îndeplinite, P. mahaleb va înflori foarte frumos. P. mahaleb este bun de folosit în plantațiile naturale (acostamente, diguri etc.).
