Acest arbore de dimensiuni medii spre mari are o coroană deschisă, liberă, compusă din ramuri principale groase și slab ramificate. Crenguțele tinere sunt grosiere și de culoare cenușie până la gri-albăstrui matrițată. Trunchiul greu și gros este gri închis, aspru și adânc canelat. Frunza este foarte mare, uneori aproape 1 m, dar de obicei de aproximativ 70 cm, atât în lungime, cât și în lățime. Este dublu-penat, iar frunzele individuale sunt ovale și au o dimensiune de aproximativ 5 - 7 cm. Toamna se îngălbenește. După căderea frunzelor, fusiformele frunzelor rămân pentru o perioadă de timp. Paniculele florale, ușor pendulante și dense, ating o lungime de aproximativ 25 cm.
