Arbore cu creștere neregulată, cu o înălțime de 15 - 20 (25) m. Are un trunchi cenușiu, cu caneluri puțin adânci, iar crengile și frunzele tinere sunt de culoare brun-roșiatică. Denumirea f. inermis este o denumire colectivă pentru diferite forme fără spini ale G. triacanthos. Prin urmare, este adesea preferat pentru plantarea pe străzi și bulevarde.
