Fraxinus excelsior este un arbore bine cunoscut, originar din Europa, din care au fost dezvoltate multe selecții utile. Coroana este de la ovală largă la aproape rotundă. Înălțimea este de 25 - 30 m, pe un sol bun, uneori 40 m. Frunzele impare au 4 - 6 perechi de frunze, pot ajunge la 25 - 30 cm și au suprafața superioară de culoare verde închis, iar cea inferioară verde mai deschis. Mugurii frunzelor sunt vizibil negri. În timpul sau chiar înainte de dezvoltarea frunzelor, înflorește în mod nesemnificativ în panicule laterale. La arborele femelă, florile sunt urmate de fructe cu nuci înaripate de 2,5 - 5 cm lungime. F. excelsior este util în plantațiile peisagistice, în brâul de vânt și în centurile verzi largi. Preferă solul bogat în nutrienți și umed. Lemnul relativ tare și rezistent este folosit, de exemplu, pentru mânere de unelte, echipamente de joacă și de gimnastică și trepte de scări.
