Cultivat din cele mai vechi timpuri în zona sa de origine, unde crește ca un copac mare. În țările mai nordice este considerabil mai mic și este folosit acolo ca plantă de recipient sau ca spalier pe un perete sudic. Crengile tinere, de culoare verde-oliv, sunt ușor păroase, dar devin curând brune și goale. F. carica are o formă foarte diversă a frunzelor. Este lobată palmat cu uneori 3, de obicei 5 lobi adânc incizați, uneori este chiar nellobată. Frunza este mai mare și mai profund incizată pe lăstarii lungi decât pe lăstarii floriferi. Inflorescența este puțin vizibilă, numeroasele flori mici se află într-un arbore gol compact. Înflorirea este urmată de fructele simulate comestibile, care sunt verzi la exterior și purpurii în interior. La maturitate, acestea devin maro și se înmoaie. Acestea sunt pline de semințe mici.
