Eucommia este un gen monotipic, ceea ce înseamnă că există o singură specie. Este un arbore cu o creștere viguroasă care a servit ca producător de cauciuc în China. Este singurul producător de cauciuc din emisfera nordică. Coroana este largă, rotundă și deschisă. Când frunza este ruptă, se eliberează o substanță cauciucată. Cele două jumătăți de frunze rămân conectate datorită acestor "fire". Frunzele groase, ovale până la alungite, sunt ascuțite lung, iar marginea frunzei este zimțată. Eucommia înflorește cu flori verzi unisexuate. Florile masculine au anterele remarcabil de lungi, de culoare brun-roșiatică, de obicei simple, uneori în ciorchine. Ele apar cu puțin timp înainte sau în același timp cu frunzele și se află la baza crengilor tinere. Pe plantele femele apar fructe de nucă eliptice, aplatizate și înaripate, lungi de aproximativ 3,5 cm și despicate la vârf. Eucommia ulmoides este cel mai rezistent arbore care furnizează cauciuc. De asemenea, scoarța este folosită în China în scopuri medicinale.
