Arbore de mărime medie, cu o coroană aproape rotundă sau în formă de evantai. Scoarța mai veche este gri-maronie și adânc canelată. Frunzele sunt de un verde închis lucios și, în funcție de locație și de (micro)climă, pot crește până la peste 15 cm. Uneori produce niște culori de toamnă galben-maronii, dar cu greu poate fi numit ornamental. Florile de culoare galben pal în formă de clopot nu sunt foarte vizibile datorită culorii lor și pentru că sunt ascunse printre frunze. Florile femele produc fructe mari și comestibile, numite fructe kaki sau sharon. Acestea sunt portocalii și au patru sepale triunghiulare distinctive în partea superioară. Fructele au un gust oarecum răvășit și pot fi folosite proaspete, precum și în mâncăruri. Îi place solul fertil bine drenat, de preferință argilos. Este destul de rezistent la vânt, dar nu tolerează vânturile reci și uscate.
