Arbore de talie medie până la aproximativ 8 m, mai întâi cu o coroană piramidală care mai târziu devine ovoidală. Din cauza ramurilor laterale oarecum căzute la o vârstă mai înaintată, coroana va deveni în cele din urmă aproape rotundă. Frunzele de un verde strălucitor devin roșu aprins toamna. Florile galbene sunt în umbeli mici și se deschid pe la mijlocul lunii februarie. Arborele este considerat cel mai bine ca fiind omologul asiatic al C. mas. Principala diferență constă în faptul că frunzele de C. officinalis au 6 - 7 nervuri laterale în loc de 3 - 5, iar crengile tinere sunt maro în loc de verzi. De asemenea, C. officinalis înflorește cu aproximativ o săptămână mai devreme decât C. mas. Arborele are nevoie de un habitat destul de uscat, de preferință cald, într-un sol calcaros ușor argilos sau nisipos.
