Această subspecie geografică de Cedrus libani este un arbore mare cu creștere rapidă, cu ramuri orizontale în ultima perioadă de viață. Crește în mod natural pe pantele muntoase uscate și calcaroase din Munții Atlas din nord-vestul Africii. Trunchiul este încă gri și neted la început, dar devine mai aspru pe arborii bătrâni. Mai târziu se desprinde în plăci mici, eliberând scoarța brun-roșiatică. Ramificarea este destul de liberă și deschisă, iar crengile sunt la început tot de culoare verde-cenușie până la gri-maroniu, dar devin cenușii în al doilea an. Acele sunt dispuse în mănunchiuri de 20 - 40 împreună și au o lungime de 2 - 2,5 cm. Conurile drepte apar toamna. Conurile tinere sunt verzi, dar mai târziu devin purpurii-maronii până la maro. Acest cedru are nevoie de mult soare și rezistă bine la poluarea aerului.
